Richard Coburn est un pianiste et organiste basé à Montréal. Il est reconnu pour ses interprétations intelligentes et perspicaces, son aise face à un répertoire intellectuellement ardu et pour sa versatilité en tant que musicien. Depuis ses débuts devant le Youth Symphony of the Kootenays à l’âge de 17 ans, il s’est également produit sur scène en Amérique du Nord, Italie, France, Autriche et Chine. Bien que travaillant principalement en collaboration avec des chanteurs classiques, M. Coburn est également actif en tant qu’organiste, compositeur, arrangeurs et directeur de coeur. M. Coburn détient un diplôme d’artiste en tant que pianiste collaboratif, obtenu sous la direction de Micheal McMahon, ainsi qu’une maîtrise en piano solo, obtenu sous la direction du Dr. Sara Laimon, tous deux enseignants à l’université McGill. Un diplôme d’organiste obtenu au College Royal Canadien de l’orgue, un baccalauréat en musique de l’université de Calgary ainsi qu’un Associate Diploma font également partis de son curriculum. L’amour profond que M. Coburn porte à la musique du vingtième siècle ainsi que son approche hautement intellectuelle l’ont mené à developper une analyse du répertoire bien personnelle, générant l’intérêt de compositeurs établis ainsi que celle de théoriciens. Ses recherches ont débuté avec la sonate au piano numéro cinq de Scriabin et touchent maintenant un répertoire infini, prenant origine dans toutes les époques et de tous les styles. M. Coburn apprécie tout particulièrement collaborer avec son frère jumeau, Michel, également pianiste professionel. Les duos ainsi que le répertoire pour deux pianos leur offrent de grands moments de bonheur.
Rich Coburn is known for his “subtle and nuanced playing.” He made his orchestral debut at 17 with the Youth Symphony of the Kootenays, and has since appeared in concert across North America, in Italy, France, Austria, and China. Though his primary work is as a vocal collaborator and coach he enjoys versatility; he also balances an active schedule as an organist, an arranger, a composer, and a choral director. Recent collaborations include the world premiere of Michael Gandolfi’s Alice in Numberland with Dawn Upshaw at the Tanglewood Music Centre, chamber concerts with members of the Orchestre de chambre McGill and duo recitals with singers and instrumentalists. Mr. Coburn holds an Artist Diploma in collaborative piano studying under Michael McMahon, and a Masters of Music focusing on solo piano repertoire studying with Dr. Sara Laimon, both from McGill University. He also holds Associate diplomas from the Royal Canadian College of Organists and the Royal Conservatory of Toronto, and a Bachelor of Music from the University of Calgary. Mr. Coburn’s deep love of twentieth century music, and his intellectual inclination have lead him to develop his own system of analysis for this repertoire. It has generated interest among established composers and theoreticians. His research in this area began with Scriabin’s Fifth Piano Sonata, and has expanded to include repertoire from virtually every period and style. Mr. Coburn finds his ideal collaborator in his identical twin brother Michael, also a professional pianist. They greatly enjoy playing duets and repertoire for two pianos.
